Shad Storm Pumping Station:

Shad Thames pumping station is owned and operated by Thames Water. The main purpose of the station is to manage the rainfall during storm conditions and the station utilises 6 Sulzer vertical lift pumps to pump the water from the storm drains into the River Thames.

Franklyn Yates Engineering was commissioned by the Tier 1 principal contractor, the GBMJV, who manages projects directly for Thames Water Utilities to undertake a major refurbishment of the pumping station, to ensure an operational life of 25 years.

Galliford Try, Bi-Water (now known as MWH Global) and Mott Macdonald (GBMJV) selected Franklyn Yates Engineering to deliver this project as a turn-key contract that was fully project managed. The preparation for this project started 12 months before the contract was awarded as Franklyn Yates Engineering worked alongside GBMJV in finalising the design brief.  Members of the management team were also busy working with an alliance of companies to partner with us on the project due to the scale and complexity.

The project had a solid start and although the strategy for completing the works had to change due to unforeseen operational constraints, we were able to adapt our programme to ensure there was no change to the completion date.

The bulk of the work was based around the refurbishment of the pumps and motors. We had been advised that certain pumps had not been run for some time due to poor performance - upon removal and inspection it was clear from the condition of the impellers that those pumps would not have been able to generate anywhere near the flow or head that they were designed for. The pumps have been refurbished to ‘as new’ condition and will now pump efficiently.

All works had to be completed to the agreed method statement, risk assessments and internal test plans. A weekly progress report was sent to the client informing them of the current status and programme adherence.

We are currently ahead of schedule – with an anticipated completion date of early 2014, 2-3 months ahead of schedule.
