Mike Tillery; Whole Life Programme Manager for United Utilities stated the following: “I would like to say a huge thank you to you all for the massive achievements that have been made to date on the Southport DMZ project and especially this week for the tremendous effort in completing the recent two shutdowns at Bickerstaffe Pumping Station which a couple of weeks ago, seemed like an almost impossible task. We have also managed to achieve flows from Blundell House through Royal Oak this week which is another milestone achievement and all this demonstrates what great collaboration we have on the project between all the contractors involved, UU delivery teams and UU Operations.

Please pass my thanks on to all your individual team members who have contributed to the recent successes as I am aware there are others besides those in this email that have been key to making these successes happen.

I know that this project has been a long hard slog with co-ordination and collaboration between so many different parties making things really difficult, but there is light at the end of the tunnel and we are making great progress so please don’t give up and continue the excellent work.

Once again, a huge thanks to you all. Please keep up the outstanding work.”

Franklyn Yates Engineering is now in a position to offer free Health and Wellbeing Checks to all of its employees.  We are one of the first companies in the construction industry to offer this service. It is similar to the NHS Health Check offered to those age 40-74 by GP practices, which is based on the best scientific evidence from Britain, and is designed to improve people's lives. The service will be delivered by our Responsible Medical Officer; Dr M Kaye, and we encourage all of our employees to take full advantage of this opportunity to discuss their health requirements with a trained professional.

The Health and Wellbeing Check is an opportunity for all Franklyn Yates employees to check their 'heart health'.  It assesses circulatory health and works out the risk of developing some of the most disabling, but preventable illnesses, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Sewage treatment in the mid 1800s saw an aqueduct carry sewage across the Staffordshire & Worcester canal to Barnhurst, with sewage running through shallow brick-lined tanks to provide some settlement.

As the Barnhurst area expanded rapidly in the early 20th century more sewage carriers (brick sewers & earth ditches) were laid to the site and in 1923 the first screens and storm tanks were installed. To cope with ever increasing flows and load the site has gradually been adapted to provide more intensive sewage treatment.

This Severn Trent Water site now treats the waste from the equivalent of 157,000 people, which includes domestic and industrial discharges.

The sewage treatments works at Netheridge was first constructed as a pumping station in 1955 and prior to this the sewage from the city flowed directly into the river by the Gloucester Docks. In 1955 the main pump house was constructed with diesel pumps that are still used today and the flow was pumped directly to the river south of the city.

In 1962 the first stages of treatment were added in the form of screening and primary treatment. A digester was also built to treat the sludge produced on site. Between 1962 and 1995 small changes took place including changing secondary digesters to primary digesters and various temporary treatment plants such as one providing chemical dosing and a VITOX plant using oxygen gas for mixing and aeration.

In 1995 the capital scheme to provide secondary treatment was completed costing approx £35m. Since then there have been a number of smaller schemes for asset replacement and additional processes such as the centrifuge and some storm screening.

Minworth STW is an important renewable energy generating plant for Severn Trent Water, generating around 55 GWh of electricity each year. The current fleet of CHPs includes 5 Waukesha CHPs (7.5MW), 1 of these CHPs has failed and is beyond economic repair, and the other 4 Waukesha CHPs are obsolete and pose a risk of failure.

It is planned to replace three of the Waukesha CHP’s with new more efficient units that will deliver further OPEX savings from increased efficiency, as well as providing increased reliability and reduced maintenance costs.
