Strongford STW Sludge Buffer:

Severn Trent’s Strongford Sewage Treatment Works has benefitted from a structural refurbishment of three concrete sludge storage tanks along with a new primary sludge/surplus sludge thickening facility.

Mott Macdonald and J N Bentley (MMB) have undertaken several capital maintenance projects at Strongford STW, one of which was the sludge buffer scheme. Franklyn Yates Engineering was selected to manufacture and install all process pipework, as well as installation of valves and instrumentation. A detailed breakdown of the project is available under the tasks tab.

THICKENER BUILDING

  • Installation of stainless steel pipework to 4no GBT’s
  • Installation of all pumps and valves
  • Installation of hot water booster set and associated pipework
  • Installation of cold water booster set and associated pipework
  • Installation of final effluent pipework and hose reels
  • Pressure testing of all pipework

SLUDGE TANK AREA

  • 70 mtr pipe bridge from Pre thickened storage tank through to belt thickener building including all stainless steel pipework
  • Installation of pump mixer and internal tank pipework to the Pre-Thickened sludge storage tank, Thickened sludge storage tank no1 and no2
  • Manufacture and installation of stainless steel pipework and installation of primary feed pumps

RAS PUMP AREA

  • Manufacture and installation of stainless steel pipework and installation of RAS pumps and associated inline equipment.
  • Installation of the 3no Vertical pump columns and 3no pumps
  • Manufacture and installation of DN600 pipework

SAS PUMP AREA

  • Manufacture and installation of stainless steel pipework and installation of SAS pumps and associated inline equipment.

CENTRATE PUMP AREA

  • Installation of centrate pumps, duck feet and guide rails
  • Installation of centrate ductile iron pipework
  • Removal of existing centrate tanks and steel work

SAS FEED PUMP AREA

  • Manufacture and installation of stainless steel pipework and installation of SAS feed pumps and associated in line equipment

FST AREA

  • Installation of FST duck feet, pumps and guide rails

ASP AREA

  • Manufacture, supply and installation of stainless steel baffle boxes
  • Installation of duck feet, pumps and guide rails

FYEL utilised an on-site fabrication area to manufacture all of the stainless steel pipework on site. This method was adopted due to time restraints with the project completion date and also ensured a fast turnaround on all fabricated items.

FYEL worked closely with the MMB project management and design team to bring the project together on time and within budget. FYEL were approached on several occasions to assist with complex design solutions to overcome unforeseen technical problems throughout the project, introducing engineering efficiency’s into the primary design saving the client both on a commercial level and also by making significant reductions to the programme completion date.

MMB and FYEL worked very well as a team, utilising one another’s experience, technical abilities and expertise in waste water treatment.
